The Runner’s Wishlist: Part 1

As Christmas draws closer, I’ve been finding more and more gorgeous gift ideas either for myself or for others. There are so many great products on the market at the moment that I just had to share some of my favourites with you. These are perfect for the runner in your life… hint hint!

Believe, Achieve Training Journal

Hands down, this has been the single purchase this year that’s had the biggest impact on my training. I have so many good things to say about it that I don’t know where to start. It’s a journal designed by pro runners Lauren Fleshman and Roisin McGettigan-Dumas , and it’s a combination of training log, journal and training guide. There are sections on nutrition, drills, stretches and – most importantly in my opinion- the psychological side of trianing. It encourages a daily journaling practice, and I’ve found the dividends to be well worth the investment!

This Works Lavender & Vertivert Candle

This year I’ve really discovered the true value of aromatherapy, and this candle has been instrumental in that! It’s got an absolutely heavenly scent that’s strong whilst not being overpowering, and it really helps me wind down at the end of a long day.

Matcha Green Tea

As someone who gets sick relatively often, I’ve found incorporating matcha green tea into my daily routine to be invaluable. It gives me a nice boost of energy without leaving me buzzing the way coffee often does. My favourite way to drink it is with hot water and a spoonful of honey- especially lovely when you’re feeling a bit poorly.

Garmin 735 Multisport Watch

If I could only have one thing from my wishlist, it would be this! This multisport watch allows tracking for running, swimming and cycling, and even has a heart-rate monitor built into the wrist strap- no more itchy, annoying chest strap! I mean, I know it’s a stretch that anyone will buy me this on a whim, but a girl can dream!

Soap & Glory Goodies

I’ve long been a fan of Soap & Glory products, be that cosmetics or bath and pamper treats. I absolutely love their shower gels and body scrubs, and it makes me feel so pampered when I have the matching set!

Sweaty Betty All Sport Backpack

This backpack is absolutely gorgeous and so so practical if, like me, you’re constantly dragging workout kit to and from work, the gym and anywhere in between. It’s available in a variety of colours, but knowing how bright most of my workout kit is, I thought black would be a safe option. If you’re reading this Mum, hint hint!

Sarah Marie Design Studio Sweatshirt

I’ve been somewhat obsessed with Sarah Marie Design Studio for sometime now, and bought myself her Elite Marathoner Tee after completing my first marathon. However she’s really outdone herself for the holiday season, with gorgeous gilded sweatshirts that just make you want to cuddle up in front of a nice warm fire.

The Obstacle is The Way

This book quite honestly revolutionised the way I think about life, its struggles, and how to overcome them. It has a lot to say about the power of hard work, as well as the value of humility. It’s not new age or airy-fairy by any stretch of the imaginaton- author Ryan Holiday does a great job of rooting a philosophical approach into everyday problems that you might encounter.

Lots of love,

November Favourites

I don’t always write a favourites post at the end of every month, but in November I had so many favourites that I just had to share them, show some gratitude, and show a little love. November was somewhat difficult, because I was made redundant- the overarching theme has been trying to keep my shit together. So here goes!

The mantra of the month

Running for the hell of it

You know what I mean- running to hear the rush of the wind and the sound of your own breathing. I’ve been having a lot of those runs recently, and they’ve been absolutely fantastic. Just what the doctor ordered.

Since Reykjavik I have been trying, somewhat in vain, to incorporate a regular yoga practice into my routine. But more recently, having lost my job and suffered from repeated tension headaches and full-blown migraines, it’s become more and more imperative for me to keep on top of my emotional wellbeing. My favourite studios have been Dragonfly Yoga Studio, Another Space in Covent Garden, and Gymbox, which offers a wide variety of classes.

It’s been a weird month at the office, with everyone being made redundant and all. But fear not, because out of the worst situations comes humour, bonding and creativity in the form of Postitnotivation! This began when my good friend and colleague started leaving me motivational post its all over my screen. A few Instagram posts later and he decided to launch the concept as a proper brand! So if you’re ever in need of some casual, friendly motivation, head over to their Instagram and give them a follow!

I’ve been spending a lot of my time before, after and in-between job interviews in various Prets around the city. I absolutely adore Pret for reasons I’ve discussed here previously; but essentially, their offer of healthful, soul-warming food paired with cheap coffee (filter for £1 anyone?) just fills me with joy.

Energy Snacks Monthly Favourites Box

I was lucky enough to receive a second Energy Snacks box, and I have to say it outperformed the first! These boxes feature a great mix of energy and protein snacks, as well as drinks mixes such as electrolyte powders. All delivered to your door, every month.

This Works Lavender and Vertivert Candle

I am absolutely head over heels in love with this candle, so much so that I’ve already burnt my way through two. I’ve been finding aromatherapy really soothing in the past few weeks when my nerves have been a little fraught, and this candle is the ultimate in relaxation. The scent is strong without being overpowering, and calms me down after a long day. You can pick these up in TK Maxx, which makes them a steal in my opinion!

Why Not Me? By Mindy Kahling

I’m currently listening to this on Audible, and it’s great for when you need a bit of a boost from every girl’s comedy idol. In this collection of essays, Kahling discusses everything from dating to Hollywood, inequality to meeting the President. And all with her trademark sense of humour.

The Arch Climbing

Recently I’ve been heading down to The Arch most weekends for a good ol’ fashioned morning of bouldering. As someone who used to climb quite regularly, it’s great to get back into the habit. Everyone is so friendly at this wall, and it’s big enough that there’s always a route to get stuck into. I’ve noticed myself radiating towards more technical and balanced-focus route- the complete opposite of the style used to enjoy!

Marks and Spencers Wholefood Salads

British national institution Marks and Spencer is pretty well known for their food offering, and recently I discovered their 2 for £3 side salads which, if you ask me, make a pretty good main for lunch. My favourites include their Borlotti, Flagolet and Black Bean Salad, as well as their Mango, Mangetout and Corriander Slaw. If you haven’t tried them already, I highly encourage you to do so!

Aaaaand that’s a wrap! I’ve been focusing on keeping calm and collected in the face of some tricky circumstances.

What have you been loving this month?

Lots of love,

Energy Snacks: Product Review (and Discount!)

These days it feels like you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to subscription boxes. Five years ago it started out with Graze, delivering snacks direct to your door, and it truly seems that the subscription box has ushered in a whole new era in how we spend! When I heard about Energy Snacks on social media, I was fangirling pretty hard (that’s what Twitter’s for, right?) and they were kind enough to send me a trial monthly favourites box. Opinions, as always, remain my own. Head to the bottom for the discount code!

What was in the October box:

  • Mule Bar (Apple Strudel)
  • Sweet Peaks (Citrus)
  • Virtue Energy Water (Lemon & Lime)
  • Tribe Bar (Cacao & Almond)
  • GU Energy Stroopwafel (Caramel Coffee)
  • GU Energy Gel (Chocolate Outrage)
  • PowerBar PowerGel Shots (Cola)
  • PowerBar Recovery 2.0 (Raspberry Cooler)
  • 32Gi Sports Gel (Raspberry)
  • 32Gi Sports Chew (Orange)
  • OTE Hydro Tabs (Blackcurrant)

The boxes retail at £19.99, and I think you actually get a fair amount of products for that, especially given that they’re specific sports nutrition goodies.

What I liked:

I loved that I was able to try out products I wouldn’t have usually bought, such as the Virtue Water. Additionally, it was great to try out Tribe Bars without having to commit to buying a whole box of them. I’m notoriously fickle when it comes to my choice of snacks, so I like to try before I buy!

What I wasn’t so keen on:

I’d like to have seen a more complete mix of recovery and everyday snacks as well as high-sugar energy foods. Yes, yes, I know, the clue is in the name, but balance is key! However, fear not! I’ve had a sneaky peek at next month’s selection and there’s a really good balance of energy, hydration and recovery.

Will I get it again?

Yes! Not necessarily as a regular subscription, but definitely when I’m doing a heavy load of training. I think you get a lot for your money, especially with items like the hydration tablets and Gus. They’re the kind of items I always run out of, and have to buy the day before a race when there are frankly other things I’d rather be spending my time doing (eating pasta and napping)! I love the idea, and it’s just so damn convenient!

What was that about a discount?

Yes, let’s get to that! The folks at Energy Snacks have offered followers a 20% discount off a monthly favourites box with code PIPINMOTION20 just head over to their site!

Have you tried Energy Snacks or a subscription box? What’s your favourite?

Lots of love,

August Favourites

The focus of this month has been intense training complemented by real recovery. I’ve been working my little butt off, and therefore taking time to rest and recover has been precious to me. Without further ado, here are my favourites for August!

Nike Pro Compression Sports Bras

I’ve never been to fussy about sports bras, but I really do love the Nike Pro Compression ones. They offer a good level of support (for a flat-chested chica like myself) and they’re pretty enough that you can wear them on their own if you fancy joining the #sportsbrasquad.

Plus I can pretend these are my girls

TREK Peanut Power Energy Bars

I like these after a training session, when I’m not going home straight away to eat. TREK Bars are cold-pressed, all natural whole food bars, and the macros are really great on them. The Peanut Power one is my favourite!

Compressport Socks

As always, my calves are pretty much screwed. I run with a forefoot strike, which puts a lot of strain on my lower legs and has led to injury in the past. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for my Compressport long compression socks, which I sleep in. (Aside: I bought a bright red pair that were on sale…and I’ve never worn them outside the house! Maybe a plainer pair next time.)

Chocolate stevia

These stevia drops are available online and from Wholefoods, and have really worked wonders for my coffee game. I love love love them. They’re zero calorie and all natural. You can even put a few drops in almond milk for a healthy take on chocolate milk goodness!

Zinc Oxide Tape

Public Service Announcement: Use Zinc Oxide tape on your feet! A friend of mine is in the army, and he gave me this tip- with all the walking they do, they know how to take care of their feet. Zinc Oxide tape is incredibly low-friction, meaning that if you tape your toes, for instance, the tape isn’t going to rub the toe next to it. It’s very cheap, and you can pick it up at your local drugstore. As someone who always has horrific blisters on their toes, this was a game changer.

Green Chai Tea

I’ve been trying (and mostly failing) to drink less coffee. The Green Chai from Yogi Tea is really scrumptious, and you can have it with or without milk. And as an added bonus, each teabag comes with a little motivational message, which I think is really sweet.

Epsom Salt Baths

As part of my recovery, I’ve been alternating between hot and cold baths. Adding Epsom Salts to a super hot bath really helps relax my muscles, and I can feel all the tightness coming undone. My favourites are the Radox Muscle Soak salts, which are only £1 per pack.

Believe Achieve Training Journal

Keeping a training journal has been really transformational for me, and I highly recommend this one from Pro Runners Lauren Fleshman and Roisin McGettigan-Dumas. It focuses on a holistic training approach, including nutrition, mental strength and the power of the team. I’ll write a full review on it soon, but spoiler alert: it’s amazing.

That’s it from me- it’s been all training and very little else for me in August!

What have your favourites been this month?

Lots of love,

July Favourites

It’s been a lovely month, and marathon training is pretty much in full swing! I’ve been trying new things and pushing my limits, which is always a good thing when it comes to training. So without further ado, here are my monthly favourites:

The Weather

Summer emerged in Britain for about two weeks in July, and we all congregated for BBQs, picnics and many an iced coffee. Whilst I struggled with the heat at times, it’s been nice not to have to be wrapped up warm all the time. And I get an excuse to wear my Nike Pros, also affectionately known as my go-faster shorts.

Running at Sunset = Dreamy
Red lipstick

On days when I don’t feel great, whether that be from tiredness or a distinct lack of mojo, I’ve been going for gorgeous bright red lipstick.  It’s a nice pick-me-up in the morning, plus it gives you a “I swear I’m awake” vibe, and makes you feel a tad more glamorous- helpful when you spend half your life in sweaty running kit.

Another Space

I’ve been to quite a few classes at Another Space this month, including Cycle and Yoga. I really rate both classes, plus absolutely love the boutique feel of the studio- fluffy white towels included!

Maple Sunrise Cereal

I have a habit of reaching for cereal whenever the marathon hunger hits, and I was recently introduced to Nature’s Path Organic Maple Sunrise Cereal by a colleague. It’s absolutely delicious, contains a variety of grains such as quinoa and amaranth, and is not too calorific for a sweet cereal. On greek yoghurt, or even on its own, it’s my go-to snack for those days when the hunger just won’t go away.

Interval Training

I’ve recently introduced more serious speedwork into my training regime- this involves interval training with LCAC, or treadmill intervals at the gym if it’s too humid outside. I really enjoy the feeling of pushing myself, and hopefully I’ll start to see improvements in speed and form.

Plus I get to train with these badasses

Chocolate covered pretzels

I discovered these bad boys a week ago just as I was headed out to the trail, and they’re pretty brilliant- a perfect combination of sweet and salty, which definitely hits the spot during (and after) a long run.

Training above my limit

Running with tougher and better runners has been a huge challenge for me this month, but ultimately I think it’s helping my performance. Firstly, you’re forced to go along at someone else’s pace (taking the control out of your hands), but more importantly you get out of your comfort zone and discover you’re capable of far more than you think!
