The Crutch Chronicles: Episode 11

Just in case anyone was wondering- I’m still not running. But I’m making progress on my broken ankle. Here’s where I’m at, just over 8 weeks post-injury.

Where I’m at physically

To be honest I’m a bit worried about my progress (or lack thereof). It’s a case of not doing my exercises, which honestly has to do with feeling a bit burnt out. I’ll be checking in with my physio in a few weeks, and so I need to make a concerted effort!

Physio

Headline: I missed hydrotherapy. Again. This is becoming a bit of a pattern, and I have to say it’s one I’m not too proud of. Given that hydrotherapy sessions are generally held within working hours, it can be tricky to fit them in (or to get away from the office). For that reason, I’ll be investigating private hydrotherapy sessions, which take the form of group classes at the hospital. Alternatively, I can go to the swimming pool myself and do some exercises. Neither of these options are ideal, but sometimes you just have to make do with what you have.

Exercise

With work being what it is, I’ve been lacking energy to workout. However I managed to squeeze in the following workouts:

Monday: 30 minutes spinning + upper body (including assisted pull-ups)

Tuesday: 30 minutes eliptical +  abs

Saturday: Kettlebells, 30 mins of cardio, abs and assisted pull-ups

Sunday: Yoga at Another Space

Saturday’s session was a real breakthrough for me. That morning I’d met with a friend who’s been training for obstacle course races, and being around him and the guys from his training group really got me pumped. I resolved to get some strength and variety into my workouts, which meant putting the weights at the start of a session, and then trying to keep the cardio varied. I have to say, it worked! Saturday’s session was a great one, even if it did leave me shaking during yoga!

Food

This whole plant-based thing is working out really well for me, and I’ve been absolutely loving spending time in the kitchen coming up with huge salads or power bowls.

Where I’m at mentally

I started seeing a new therapist last week, and it’s good to know I’ll be able to take some of the load off very soon. Right now, I’m focusing on self-care with as much focus as my fitness, because ultimately I want my body to heal quickly and get back to work as soon as possible.

How’s your week been?

How do you cope with a lack of motivation?

Lots of love,

Pippa
